Project AWARE and TISS are SAMHSA-funded grant programs that help state and local education agencies develop school based mental health systems to improve mental health awareness, prevention, and access to services for students. A central goal of both programs is building sustainable infrastructure that can endure beyond the grant period. Despite this, sustaining mental health programs and services after grant funding ends remains a persistent challenge. This profile highlights how a national learning community (LC) led by CMHIS supported Project AWARE & TISS grantees in identifying local facilitators and barriers to program sustainment and creating practical sustainability plans. We also feature insights from a participating team from Rhode Island AWARE and TISS, including how the LC supported their sustainability planning.
